Visitors to the Emily Dickinson Museum explore the Homestead, where Dickinson was born, died, and did most of her writing, and The Evergreens, home of the poet’s brother, sister-in-law, and their three children. The Homestead, lived in by other families after Dickinson’s death, is in the process of being restored to its appearance during the poet’s writing years. The Evergreens was only ever lived in by Dickinsons or family heirs and its original 19th-century finishes remain intact. Dickinson’s life story and the story of her posthumous publication is uniquely entwined with these two houses and the three acres upon which they sit in Amherst. In this online exploration, you will visit several rooms within the two houses of the Dickinson family. Lavinia Dickinson found her sister’s poetry after her death and turned to both their brother Austin’s wife Susan and Austin’s mistress Mabel Loomis Todd to aid in the publication of Emily Dickinson’s work. However, given the poor relationship between the Dickinson and Todd families due to Austin’s affair, many of Emily Dickinson’s poems were not readily published shortly after her death. Next door, Austin and Susan Dickinson lived at The Evergreens until their respective deaths in 1895 and 1913. Martha Dickinson Bianchi, their only surviving child, continued to live in the house, and preserved it, without change, until her own death in 1943. In 1991, The Evergreens passed to a private testamentary trust, the Martha Dickinson Bianchi Trust, which began developing the house as a museum.
All this happens in antebellum Massachusetts, where women were not expected to pursue dreams outside the family. We even see her hiding her identity to write a contest-winning poem. After her death her family members found her hand-sewn books, or “fascicles.” These fascicles contained nearly 1,800 poems.

Started these un-conversations with nobody, and so many years after her death, now — in curled script, with their sweet, perfect Ms and half-formed Ys, unpublished and unseen until now — they speak to us. The last several years of Dickinson’s life were plagued by the deaths of many of those closest to her. Many theorize that these deaths, along with her own physical health problems that worsened with age, contributed to her reclusive lifestyle. Furthermore, her mother’s health was declining and Dickinson spent much of her time caring for her mother, which did not allow her to leave her home. In 1833 the Homestead was sold to David Mack, owner of a general store in Amherst, and Fowler Dickinson resettled in Ohio, where he died in 1838. The Edward Dickinson family continued to live at the Homestead with the Mack family for seven more years, until 1840, when Edward purchased a clapboard house (no longer standing) on Pleasant Street.
